It is of great variety and may not be enjoyed by the timid, but if you are adventerous then you will enjoy it. Summer is about being adventerous so I think it is pretty kick ass. It starts off with some beautiful instrumental music which gives way to the lolling melodies of Belle and Sebastian. Death Cab for Cutie strike me as a summer band with this sort of summer romance echoing them so it is no wonder that I included "Summer Skin", though Plans is kind of slow overall for the summer. Plus Minus of +/- set a great summer tone with their cascading songs that are just the right speed for sailing on the ocean. "Joggin Gorgeous Summer" has almost a calypso feel to it and reminds me of being on an island filled with mythological creatures, which is a past time of mine. Action-Action's "8th Grade Summer Romance" reminds me of my own 8th grade romance; without the dark unsetteling lyrics. Of Montreal all are an all seasons band, they transcend all boundaries. Their crazy antics are enjoyable all year round but "Oslo in the Summertime" includes summer in the song so I went with that song. The Dears "Summer of Protest" are the mid-point and the most epic song on the mix. Stretching over the course of 7 minutes it sort of breaks the mix in half. Essex Green bring things back to a summer feel with their song "All Summer Long". Touching upon the void of summer where everyone vacates back to their home towns and comes back to college. Summer can be a rough time and Billy Joel seems to be going through a rough time in his song "Summer, Highland Falls". Matt Pond PA are a bit more excited about summer and their song "Summer is Coming" almost expresses a Grease "summer lovin" feel with cellos and keyboards. The longing for that summer relationship that usually ends horribly but is still longed for. Once in a while you find that perfect person and want to bottle them up in a little jar, well The Lucksmiths share that setiment and provide the perfect anthesis to MPPA's song. Latterman are a local punk band out of Long Island and they are all about being positive. Summer is about partying it up and having a good time so their song "There's Never A Reason Not to Party" is perfect. I'm From Barcelona are a 26 piece band out of Sweeden and their debut CD is filled with huge choruses and is a more organized Broken Social Scene. Their song "Rec and Play" reminds me of having one song or album you listen to all summer but then you never listen again once fall comes. If you are going to be on a boat or at the shore The Decemberists are the band to turn to, "Ocean Side" is their most obvious sea-side tune. The mix ends with Jens Lekman's fun clap along "Sweet Summer's Night on Hammer Hill. It's unique off key sing alongs make it the perfect song to close out your summer. It almost sounds like everyone is having a blast in the song and that is what summer is all about. So here is the tracklisting for those of you who did not want to read my boring rant:

1) Yann Tiersen- Summer 78
2) Belle & Sebastian- I Know Where the Summer Goes
3) Death Cab For Cutie- Summer Skin
4) Plus Minus (+/-) - Summer Dress 1 Download
5) Islands- Joggin Gorgeous Summer
6) Action-Action- 8th Grade Summer Romance
7) Of Montreal- Oslo in the Summertime
8) Dears- The Summer of Protest
9) Essex Green- All Summer Long
10) Billy Joel- Summer, Highland Falls
11) Matt Pond PA- Summer is Coming
12) The Lucksmiths- Sunlight in a Jar
13) Latterman- There's Never A Reason Not to Party Download
14) I'm From Barcelona- Rec & Play Download
15) The Decemberists- Ocean Side
16) Jens Lekman- Sweet Summer's Night on Hammer Hill

$5.99 12 Packs and Touching My Toes

A year ago today I graduated from college. That is a crazy thought because it feels like yesterday. As I rose my can of Natural Ice to the sky last night to celebrate the graduation of friends, I was proud of them. Was I proud of myself when I graduated? The security of continuing school held me together. The security of still continuing school holds me together. As we walked to get an 18 pack of beer because I saw it as my job to quench the thirst of the graduating, my friend was crying. She was crying because she was losing a friend to graduation. Her tears of joyous sorrow combined with the Natural Ice were quite powerful. I told her "he is successful, he made it out and you should be proud of him". That is going to make it better, right? So this guy that I dont really know, besides for that he wears this multi-colored spray-painted hat, gets to be successful but I don't. I put on a pretty good front, I mean, I can drink like 10 Natural Ice's and touch my toes. That is something to be proud of, isn't it? Singing Against Me!, Piebald, and Big D and the Kids Table while jumping on other dudes. This is growing up. 23 and I am known as the guy who touches his toes. Where is this pride I am supposed to feel for myself? Is it in these songs I sing? Is it in these beers I drink?

I suppose that I shall find it. This summer may be my chance to become an existentialist. Free from the hectic life of Long Island and surrounded by a beautiful lake, some great people, and myself. I will be with myself a lot this summer. I just need to decide if it is time to stop singing these songs, but no matter what I will still touch my toes. To those who are graduating I ask you to be proud of yourself. You fucking did it. I will miss Sara terribly but she is going to kick some ass out there. Jazzy and Kelly will be around for another half a year so I dont have to let them go just yet. Everyone else who reads this and is graduating, I am proud of you too.
